Dan Epstein on Carbon Emissions

Dan Epstein, Head of Sustainable Development and Regeneration writes
on London 2012’s website: ‘At the Olympic Park we know that concrete
is one material that significantly adds to carbon emissions during
construction.

Because of this, we want to reduce carbon missions as part of our approach to addressing climate change. Therefore, we are using concrete mixes that produce around 40% less carbon than the UK industry average. This has helped the Park and the Olympic Village reduce carbon emissions by nearly 80,000 tonnes of carbon so far.’

Dan concludes candidly: If the UK construction industry takes up a similar approach, more than 1m tonnes of carbon would be avoided each year and for very little (if any) additional cost. That would be a great outcome and one we are keen to help other projects achieve.
